Cody and Trevor Jeffers, brothers from the Barnwell County Career Center bass fishing club, finished seventh in the 2011 High School Fishing World Finals July 20-22 on Arkansas’ Lake Dardanelle.
The Jeffers competed against 101 other high-school teams from 23 states and were poised to win until faltering the final day.
The first day, they weighed in a 5-fish limit at 14 pounds, two ounces, and were in second place. Their 10-pound, 1-ounce limit the second day moved them into second place.
The field was cut to the top seven teams for the final day, and weights were zeroed. The Jeffers weighed in three bass the final day at 4-6 to finish seventh.
“The fishing just got tough. They dropped the lake level a little over a foot and ruined the areas we had been fishing,” Cody Jeffers said. “We did not have a game plan for a lower water level.”
Gunn wins on Clarks Hill
Brian Gunn of Savannah won the Bassmaster Weekend Series on Clarks Hill Lake on Aug. 27-28 with a 2-day total of 26.5 pounds, taking home $3,108.
“In the mornings, I started fishing a Pop-R,” Gunn said. “Once the sun got up, I switched to a 10-inch plastic worm. I fished it really slowly in hydrilla. I knew there were quality fish there. I made up my mind to stay put. Being patient made the difference. On the first day, I caught my four best fish from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.”
James Rampey of Liberty finished second with 25.95 pounds and won $1,554. Steve DeBord of Martinez, Ga., was third with 19.18 pounds, including a 5.51-pound bass that was the tournament’s big fish. DeBord’s winnings totalled $1,338. Eddie Herlong of Prosperity finished fourth place with nine bass for 18.70 pounds and won $724. Donald Hinson of Lugoff was fifth with 18.44 pounds and won $621.
In the Co-Angler Division, Dan J. Martin of Bluffton brought in six bass weighing 13.32 pounds to finish first, winning $1,434. Kyle Giella of Pooler, Ga., took second with six bass weighing 12.18 pounds and won $717. Eddy Morgan of Charlotte, N.C., was third with six bass weighing 10.63 pounds for $478. Kameron Harbin of Abbeyville was fourth place with six bass weighing 9.90 pounds for $334. Ron Figueroa of Appling, GA, followed in fifth place with six bass weighing 9.55 pounds for $286. Brian D. Hudson of Lexington fished a green pumpkin jig in 20 feet of water to catch the division lunker at 4.39 pounds worth $135.
Yang wins Grady’s Kayak Tournament
Tony Yang of Toccoa, Ga., won the inaugural Grady’s Great Outdoors Kayak Tournament on Lake Hartwell. Held Aug. 27, it drew a field of 21 fishermen.
Fish were measured, photographed and released, and Yang won with a total of 76.75 inches. He also had the big bass at 19.5 inches.
Yang caught his fish on a pearl/white Fluke, with the majority of the fish caught back in the coves and around structure in six inches of water. He won $210.
Chris Wilson of Easley was second with 72.25 inches, winning $105. Patrick Hall of Hendersonville, N.C., was third with 57.75 inches, winning $63, and Brad Knight of Belton was fourth with 53.75 inches and won $42.
Anderson wins at Clarks Hill
Phillip Anderson of Saluda won the ABA-D96 tournament Aug. 21 on Clarks Hill with a 5-fish limit that weighed 12.78 pounds.
Anderson, who won $645, caught his fish on crankbaits and worms around deep brushpiles in the upper end of the lake.
Kent Walker of Cross Hill was second with 11.65 pounds and had the day’s big fish, a 4.97-pound largemouth. His total winnings were $511. Brandon Cobb of Greenwood was third with 10.05 pounds and took home $103. Randy Gillespie of Lincolnton, Ga., was fourth with 8.79 pounds, winning $78.
Auten is sixth in FLW Championship
Todd Auten of Lake Wylie finished sixth in the FLW Tour’s Forrest Wood Cup on Arkansas’ Lake Ouchita in mid-August.
Auten, who finished 25th in the FLW Angler of the Year standings, moved from 15th to sixth place on the third day of competition and remained their on the fourth and final day, finishing with 46.02 pounds and winning $45,000.
The only other entry with ties to South Carolina, Andy Montgomery, finished eighth with 42-11 and won $35,000.
Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., won with a total of 61.01 pounds, taking home $601,000.
Jones, Owens win Waccamaw finale
Chris Jones and Ed Owens of Conway won the CATT Waccamaw Summer Trail’s final event, held Aug. 13 on the Waccamaw River.
Jones and Owens weighed in a 5-bass limit at 10.85 pounds and took home $2,500. Their 4.7-pound bass won big-fish honors, wroth another $203, and a bonus of $460 gave them a total of $3,163.
Timmy Thompkins and Carlton Thompkins of Myrtle Beach finished second with 10.70 pounds and won $1,200. Brian Howard and Jeremy Hewitt took third with 8.75, collecting $700. Carlus King and Kevin Edge were fourth with 7.70 for $300, and Mike Brinsfield and William Gaither of Shallotte, N.C., were fifth with 7.15 for $200.
