Kriet leads Van Dam by two ounces entering last round
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Jason Quinn of York made the second-day cut in the Bassmasters Classic on Alabama’s Lake Lake on Saturday — by the skin of his teeth.
Entering Sunday’s final round, Quinn will be in 25th place — the last spot to qualify — more than 16 pounds behind leader Jeff Kriet of Oklahoma. He caught a 5-fish limit on Saturday that weighed 9 pounds, 13 ounces, giving him 15-9 for two days.
But Quinn is the one of South Carolina’s three competitors to make the cut. Brent Long, a North Carolina resident who fishes for a South Carolina BASS Federation club, wound up 39th with 7-10 after catching only a single fish on Saturday. Casey Ashley of Donalds finished 41st with 6-11 after a second round in which he caught two fis that weighe 2-9.
Kriet has a 2-ounce lead over Kevin Van Dam of Kalamazoo, Mich., the 2009 Bass Angler of the Year. Kriet weighed in a 15-10 limit on Saturday to finish with 32-1. Van Dam, the first-day leader, added a 12-7 limit for a total of 31-15.
Texas Todd Faircloth is third with 31-14 after a 13-12 catch on Saturday. Past Classic champ Mike Iaconelli is fourth with 26-12 after a 12-3 second round, and Alabaman Russ Lane is third at 25-11 after an 11-10 second round.
