FUQUAY-VARINA — The Cape Fear Branch of Quality Deer Management raised $2,100 at its first “REACH for the Green” golf tournament Sept. 7 at Crooked Creek Golf Club.

“We had 18 foursomes, 72 players and 94 sportsmen participate, and I think everyone had a good time,” said Cape Fear chapter president Guy Gardner. “We’ll do this again in May or June 2009.”

The Cape Fear QDMA chapter recently earned its second straight national QDMA Chapter of the Year award and also won an award for having the organization’s top youth program, “QDM for Kids.”

At the tournament, four teams tied for first with a score of 53 (18-under par). A card match determined the winning group of Ray, George and Bob Womble and Robbie Currin. The James Gay family (James, Lyn, Meagan Gay and Tate Rogers) was second followed by the Harnett County Hooligans team of John Holland, Craven and Adrienne Millican and Ashley Gilliam.

The N.C. Sportsman Magazine team of Craig Holt, Bill Aldridge, John Dawson and Ernie York also shot 53.

Dawson of Burlington won two closest-to-the-pin awards while York, Craven Milligan and Bob Richardson won one each. Long-drive contest winners were Mark McCreery and Taryn Munroe. Ryan Richardson won the putting contest.

The event also featured a silent auction and raffle items. Funds will support an 8,500-acre outdoor classroom with handicap access, woodsmanship programs for youths, an urban deer-management program, and a three-day wildlife-education event. All programs are free and open to the public.
