Norman spits out big cats

Ken Tucker (left) and Aaron Ciucevich won the NCCATS event on Lake Norman in mid-January with these two big blue catfish.

Tucker, Ciucevich win NCCATS with 55.7

Ken Tucker of Lincolnton and Aaron Ciucevich of Harrisburg brought two blue cats to the scales weighing 55.7 pounds to top a field of 21 teams at the Jan. 12 N.C. Catfish Association Tournament Series event at Lake Norman.

Tucker and Ciucevich — whose fishing buddies jokingly refer to as “Czechoslovakia” — won $330 for first place and an additional $400 for the side pot. They collected another $210 for the big fish of the day, a 39.2-pound cat.

The two fishermen caught their fish in 20 feet of water on cut gizzard shad. They had only four bites all day, and two of those fish didn’t hook up, leaving them with their two big fish to weigh.

The Stanly team of Lonnie White and Phil Leonard placed second with two blue cats weighing 36.1 pounds and received $150. Their catch was anchored with a 25.7-pound fish.

Nick and Daniel Jeffers of Dallas took third with 35.2 pounds. The bigger of their two fish was a blue that weighed 29.1 pounds, the second-biggest cat of the day. They earned $100.

Fourth place went to three fishermen from Maiden: Justin Edwards, Jonathan Goodson and Trevor Murphy. Their 2-fish catch of 34.8 pounds paid $50.

The Pinnacle Access was nearly filled to capacity when unseasonable 70-degree temperatures brought fishermen scurrying to the lake. ■
