Andy Montgomery of Blacksburg sewed up his berth in the 2011 Bassmaster Classic, finishing second in the Bassmaster Southern Open season standings.
Montgomery will join Jason Williamson of Aiken, who qualified through the Bassmaster Elite Series. They will join 48 other fishermen in the “World Series” of bass fishing Feb. 18-20 on the Louisiana Delta.
Montgomery clinched his berth with an 11th-place finish in the Bassmaster Southern Open on Georgia’s Lake Seminole in early October.
Montgomery finished with 31.14 pounds and won $3,154. Two other fishermen from South Carolina wound up in the top 20: Brett Mitchell of Timmonsville was 12th with 30.13 pounds and won $2,760; and Todd Auten of Lake Wylie was 19th with 28.7 pounds, winning $1,341.
Greenwood rules in 6-Man Team
Teams from Greenwood took the top two spots in the South Carolina BASS Federation Inc. 6-Man Team Tournament Oct. 8-9 on Clarks Hill Lake, besting a field of 45 teams and 266 fishermen.
The Greenwood Bassmasters finished first with 51 fish for 76.60 pounds. The Rebel Bassmasters of Greenwood were second with 46 fish for 65.97 pounds.
The Easley Bassmasters No. 1 were third with 41 fish and 62.21 pounds, followed by the Dixieland Bassmasters with 47 fish and 61.05 pounds, and the Carolina Bassmasters with 48 fish for 59.07 pounds.
Bryan Gunter of the Greenwood Bassmasters was the top individual with 19.15 pounds. Steven James of the Easley Bassmasters No. 1 was second with 17.68, including a 5.67-pound lunker that was the big fish of the tournament. William Singletary of Lynches River Bass Club was third with 15.97 pounds, and Josh Warren of the Wylie South Bassmasters was fourth with 15.71 pounds.
The top four individual winners will join the 12-man state team.
Anderson wins on Clarks Hill
Phillip Anderson of Saluda won the ABA Division 96 qualifying tournament Oct. 17 on Clarks Hill Lake.
Anderson’s winning 56-fish limit of 11.66 pounds was good for $622. He caught his fish on spinnerbaits on the upper end of the lake.
Bradley Gunter of Greenwood was second with 8.93 pounds for $378. Sean Anderson of Saluda was third with 9.59 pounds for $97, and William Roberson was fourth with 7.55 pounds for $71. He won another $110 for his 2.91-pound big fish.
Phillip Anderson leads the season standings by 20 points over Don Kneece, with Phil Morris three points farther back.
N.C. team tops Hartwell slab event
Randy Pope and Steve Deitz of Hickory, N.C., took home the $1,000 first-place money in the Oct. 9 South Carolina Crappie Tournament Trail event on Lake Hartwell.
Pope and Deitz caught a 7-fish limit that weighed 9.07 pounds.
Rod Wall and Braxton Wall of Ninety Six were second with 9.05, winning $250. They also had the 2.25-pound big fish of the tournament, which was worth a $90.
Devin Brothers and Chris Younce of Anderson took third with 7.97 for $100.
Marc Danque and Dale Willard of Chapin had the second big fish, a 1.72-pound slab worth $50.
The trail’s next tournament will be Dec.11, at Fishing Creek/Stumpy Pond.
