North Carolina pro makes best of his chances in Bassmaster, still misses cut

How crazy can bass fishing be? Brandon Gray of Bulloch found out on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the Bassmaster Classic on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell.

Gray had one fish in his livewell around 1:30 when he pulled up to a dock. He couldn’t have expected much, because he’d fished the dock twice in Friday’s first round and once this morning without a single bite.

So he caught six fish on six casts.

“I did exactly what I’d been doing the times before. It was crazy,” he said. “There was one little limb under one corner of the dock, and you brought it across that limb and got bit. They were exactly where I thought they would be. I knew they were there.”

Gray finished with a 5-bass limit that weighed 9 pounds, 3 ounces, giving him a two-day total of 15-10, not quite good enough to qualify for the final day.

“I really didn’t do anything different. I started in a different area and caught one at 7:30, then I didn’t have another until 1:30,” he said.
