The Lowcountry Anglers fishing club, one of the largest in the Charleston area, held its 16th-annual tournament on June 16, and flounder master Mark Locklair of Mount Pleasant outfished more than 125 competitors to sweep the flounder division and take home the Outstanding Male Angler award.
Locklair’s three flounder weighed 5.58, 4.24 and 3.6 pounds, but he downplayed his catch. “This wasn’t my best day of flounder fishing at all,” he said.
Kevin O’Neale weighed in three kings very near the 5:30 p.m. weigh-in cutoff at the Charleston Maritime Center and just missed sweeping that division. He took first with a 25.06-pound king and second with a 22.58-pound king; Charlie Tierney took third with an 11.54-pound king.
Bruce Humbert aced the sheepshead division with an 8.38-pound fish that he caught in nearshore waters. Lonnie East III finished second with a 7.26-pounder caught from inshore waters. Robbie Forbes, who was fishing with Humbert, took third with a 6.94-pound fish.
Scotty McInerny won the Spanish mackerel division with a 4.64-pound fish, with Tim Karl taking second at 3.98 and Russell Green taking third place with his 2.68-pound fish.
The top bluefish was Eric Douglas’s 1.26-pound blue. Donna Gerke won Outstanding Female Angler, in part because of her 1.22-pound blue, which took second. Mark Locklair won third place with a 1.12-pound bluefish.
The black sea bass category went to Rick Neilson for his 1.78-pound fish. Second and third place went to Doug Hoover for his twin 1.52-pound offerings. Youth angler Trey Baker weighed in a 1.16-pound black sea bass, which was good for the Outstanding Youth Angler award.
