Davidson County team scores big in Badin FOM tourney

Robert Mixon and Robert Lambert bagged almost 23 pounds of bass to win the Fishers of Men event on Badin Lake last Saturday.

Mixon, Lambert catch big bag on blades for big payday

Robert Mixon of Lexington and Robert Lambert of Denton took advantage of high winds to capture the May 4 Fishers of Men Piedmont Division tournament at Badin Lake, their second victory on the circuit.

While many of the 38 teams struggled in the harsh breezes, Mixon and Lambert caught 17 keepers by tossing spinnerbaits at windy points and banks. Their best five fish weighed 22.60 pounds, with the biggest going 5 pounds, 5 ounces. Their earnings totaled $1,794.

The two anglers were asked if they were sight-fishing.

“If we were sight-fishing, we would have caught nothing just like we did at the last tournament at Lake Norman,” said Mixon.

No other team cracked the 20-pound mark, though four teams had 19 pounds or more.

Mike Simpson of Fayetteville and James Ogle of Winston-Salem placed second with 19.97 pounds that paid $634. They fished frogs and Senkos to take their fish.

Nick Mann of High Point and Michael Bryant of Thomasville took third with 19.17 pounds and had the big fish of the day with a 6.48-pound bass, winning $646. David Snyder of Concord and Bryon O’ Daniel of Kannapolis ranked fourth with 19.14 pounds and collected $486. Anthony Brooks of Albemarle and Dwayne Saunders of Troy completed the run of 19-pound stringers with 19.06 pounds, good enough for fifth and $358.

Other teams in the money were: Bo Russell and Mark Tarlton, sixth, with 16.10 for $218; and Mark Benge of Rockwell and Rodney Cozart of Eden, seventh, with 15.69 for $162.
