Clemson angler mixes it up for winning catch

Brandon Cobb of Greenwood won the ABA Division 96 championship tournament on Lake Greenwood Aug. 26, weighing in a 5-fish limit that pushed the scales to 15.72 pounds.

Cobb caught his fish in around mid-lake, fishing brush piles, docks, and points anywhere from 2 to 25 feet deep with crankbaits, jigs, spinnerbaits and soft plastics.

Cobb, who will graduate from Clemson in December, netted $475 for the win. He said he didn’t catch more than one fish on any single bait and had only two fish by 11:30 a.m.

Phillip Anderson of Saluda was second with 14.31 pounds, which included a 6.84-pound fish that was the tournament’s biggest. He fished the upper part of the lake and caught his big fish on a spinnerbait. Anderson earned a total of $358.

Mitchell Kneece of Saluda was third with 12.62 for $71, and John Axsom of Gray Court and Andrew Lake of Batebourg rounded out the top five with 7.4 and 5.43 pounds.

Quinn eighth at Oneida

Jason Quinn of York finished eighth at the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament Aug. 23-26 on Oneida Lake out of Syracuse, N.Y.

Quinn was seventh after the first day with 15.8 pounds and added 16.11 pounds on the second day to move into fifth. He caught 11.6 the third day to finish eighth and pocket $20,200.

Marty Robinson of Lyman finished 25th with 38.5 pounds and won $19,000; Jason Williamson of Aiken finished 31st with 36.13 and won $16,200.

Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Ala., won with 62.6 pounds and netted $108,760 in cash and bonuses.

Grooms wins Weekend Series event on Wylie

Wade Grooms of Bonneau won the Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament Aug. 18-19 on Lake Wylie with a 2-day total of 22.9 pounds.

Grooms had 5-fish limits that weighed 11.58 and 11.32 pounds to take home $2,525.

“I caught all my fish on a jig off the docks, and I don’t think that’s any real secret,” Grooms said. “It’s just something that’s a real strong pattern here that works almost year around.”

Brian Huskins of Mount Holly, N.C., finished second with 22.75 after leading with 13.01 the first day. Parks Jones of York was third with 22.73. Daniel Grassi of Pooler, Ga., was the big-fish winner with 4.98 pounds.

Sammy Freeman of Irmo won the co-angler division with 11.58 pounds and took home $1,220. Brian New of Belmont, N.C., was second with 9.49 and Montae Gregg of Lynchburg was third with 9.25.

Russell Gardner of Seneca caught the co-angler big fish at 3.91 pounds.

Gearharts finish 1-2 in youth striper tourney

Tommy Geareart, fishing with his father, Shawn, won the Midlands Striper Club’s youth tournament July 21 on Lake Murray.

Gearhart caught two fish that weighed a total of 13 pounds, and he won a trophy for the biggest fish, a 7 ½-pounder.

Fishing out of the same boat, Jacob Gearheart took second with two fish weighing 11-3. Ashley Brensinger of Lexington, fishing with her father, Richy, took third with two fish weighing 10-3. Ciara Richardson of Swansea, fishing with her father, Tommy, caught the biggest striper among female anglers with a 6-4 striper.

Christopher Higgins, fishing with his grandfather, Donnie Christopher of Rock Hill won the Jim Goller Lake Murray Billfish Award with a 48-inch gar. Joshua Aycock won the Mr. Ed Fat Cat Award with his 3-8 pound blue cat.
