CCA tagged redfish tourney

Five red drum in the Beaufort area are carrying these special white CCA tags

New Key West Boat is first place prize

The second annual 30 day Lowcountry tagged redfish tournament is being held during the month of November for CCA members in the waters surrounding Beaufort. Five slot-limit redfish have been tagged and released with CCA tags and the first recaptured fish is good for a brand new boat.Event Chairman Billy Plair is co-chair of the Lowcountry Chapter of CCA located in Beaufort. “The tournament has a registration fee of $25 for CCA members, but don’t worry if you’re not a member, because for $50 you can become a member and fish the 30-day quest for one of the five redfish tagged by our tagging team,” said Plair.

The first tagged redfish reported to Plair is good for the first place prize of a 2011 Key West 1720 boat with a 90 horsepower Yamaha four stroke motor and a Road King aluminum trailer. Title Sponsors Key West Boats and Butler Marine say the boat package is a $20,000 value. “We really hope that someone wins the boat this year,” said CCA Executive Director Scott Whitaker.

While no tagged redfish were recaptured during the November 2009 tournament, one of the tagged redfish was recaptured during the 2009 Beaufort water festival, seven months later, after traveling five miles and growing three inches. The special tags are white in color and carry a specific ID #, a contact phone number and an expiration date.

If a second tagged redfish is recaptured during the November tournament then a second place prize will be awarded in the form of a $10,000 shopping spree gift certificate to Bass Pro Shops. All entrants in the tournament will be entered in a drawing for one $500 prize to be awarded at the conclusion of the tournament. Also, a new rod and reel will be given away to the entrant who reports the most DNR tagged redfish during November.

“We are promoting recreational fishing as well as trying to increase membership statewide,” said Whitaker. “The Beaufort area is a great place to visit and fish so it doesn’t matter where you live, get in the tournament and go down to Beaufort and wet a line.” The tournament dates are November 1 through November 30.
