Badin tournament date is switched

Steve Dyer of Mt. Pleasant won the big-fish award with this 6.31-pound bass and teamed with Rob Sledzewski of Lincolnton to win the Jan. 9 Southern Championship Fishing Winter Trail event.

The Southern Championship Fishing Trail’s Yadkin Spring Series opener at Badin Lake has been switched to March 13 to March 14 to avoid conflicting with the March 13 Jim Ledbetter Memorial Cancer Benefit Tournament at Lake Norman.

“We were contacted by the organizer of that tournament, and we agreed not to have our tournament on that day,” said Tony Furr of the Southern Championship Fishing Trail.

“There are a lot of flyers out with the wrong date posted,” he said.

The Ledbetter event supports the V Foundation for Cancer Research founded by the late Jim Valvano, the former N. C. State basketball coach who died of cancer. The event is named in memory of Ledbetter, a well-known television fishing show host and professional fisherman.

Tournament notes

• Six bass pros from North Carolina have qualified for the 2010 BASS Elite Series. They are: Guy Eaker of Cherryville, Pat Golden of High Point, Britt Myers of Lake Wylie, Marty Stone of Fayetteville, Dustin Wilks of Rocky Mount, and Dave Wolak of Wake Forest.

• BASS has cancelled the Women’s Bassmaster Tour. The announcement was somewhat surprising since BASS had previously released the 2010 WBT tournament schedule and had anglers registering for the trail.

“This was a very tough decision and one that we didn’t take lightly,” said Tom Ricks, BASS general manager and vice president. “We made every effort to grow the WBT — even awarding WBT anglers a berth in the Classic — but ultimately, it didn’t resonate.”

WBT anglers who sent in their entry fees will receive a full refund.

• Andy Montgomery of Blacksburg, S.C., a regular on tournaments on the Catawba River system, finished 14th at the Jan. 14-16 BASS Southern Open at Florida’s Lake Okeechobee. His 3-day catch of 20-07 paid $2,559. Brad Staley of Pleasant Garden was 19th with 19 pounds and won $2,104.

• Pinky Sides, who has conducted bass fishing tournaments at Badin and Tillery lakes for almost 20 years, recently retired as tournament director of the Saturday Wildcat Series and Tuesday Evening Series. Those trails will now be conducted by Bo Russell.
