Conditions changed, bite played out, Elite Series pro says
Casey Ashley stuck with the pattern and area that had him sitting sixth place going into the final day of competition in the 2014 Bassmaster Classic. And that decision cost him.
“People were saying it was going to clear up, and it did,” Ashley said. “I could see the bottom where I was fishing. And that’s not good.”
Ashley managed 15 pounds, 13, and slipped to 11th place.
He continued to work a Lucky Craft RTO150 lipless crankbait over a shallow spawning flat, ripping the lure out of vegetation to trigger strikes.
“It got tough,” Ashley said. “No wind and the sunshine hurt me. I caught seven fish, including two throwbacks.
“I caught my fifth fish at 2:15 (p.m.).”
Despite falling in ranking, Ashley said he thought he had done everything he could.
“I wouldn’t do anything different,” he said. “If it ain’t your time, it ain’t your time.”
