Cherry takes BLF at Old Hickory

Boater Hank Cherry of Charlotte won the Oct. 28 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Chevy Wild Card event at Old Hickory Lake, Gallatin, Tenn.Cherry had a two-day catch of 18 pounds, 13 ounces and won $6,457 plus a berth in the Wal-Mart BFL All-American. He also received $1,000 for the Ranger Cup contingency award.

The N.C. State Junior B.A.S.S. Championship took place Nov. 4 at Lake Norman with Shane LeHew of Charlotte and Bubba Cribb of Taylorsville winning invitations to the Feb. 15-18 B.A.S.S. Junior Classic at Lake Logan Martin, Ala., where they’ll compete for $27,000 in scholarships.

LeHew topped the 15- to 18-age group with 8.5 pounds of bass. Courtney Dover of Charlotte finished second with 5.3 pounds and Tyler Teer of Burlington ranked third with 3.3 pounds.

Cribb won the division for 11- to 24-year olds with 2.14 pounds. Dylan Flowe of Charlotte placed second with 1.15 pounds; Justin Isaacs of Mooreville took the third spot with 1.09 pounds.

Lexington’s David Fritts finished third with 32-12 at the Nov. 15-18 Wal-Mart FLW Series tournament at Lake Lewis Smith, Jasper, Ala., and won $40,000.

The Poor Boys Bass Club, established in 1976, topped a field of nine bass clubs competing at the Nov. 18 Battle of the Clubs tournament at Lake Norman.

Club members weighed in 36.46 pounds of fish taken from wind-blown rocky points with jigs, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits.

Brian Travis and Michael Benfield of the Lookout Shoals Bass Club had the big fish of the day with a 4.47-pound bass.

Last year’s event at Lake Hickory was won by the Gunpowder Bass Club with 22.77 pounds.
