Boat capsized on Murray Saturday evening

A boat capsized on Lake Murray Saturday evening, and while one of the two boaters was able to swim to shore safely, the other died. His body was located by an SCDNR aircraft near Goat Island.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has confirmed the man’s identification as 26-year-old Jonathan Scott Scruggs, of Gaffney. Scruggs was reportedly wearing his life vest when the boat capsized, and according to search-and-rescue personnel, the life vest was still on Scruggs’ lifeless body.

The boat turned over around 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening, and someone made a distress call to the SCDNR. Search crews looked during the night, but Scruggs’ body was not found until 10 a.m. Sunday.

The cause of death is uncertain at this point, and an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. It is also unclear why the boat capsized.

Anyone who witnessed the boat capsizing or has information is urged to call the SCDNR or the Lexington County Sheriff’s Dept.
