New laws for SC crabbers
South Carolina’s recreational crabbers have some new laws coming in 2025.
The following changes will go into effect next year:
Recreational crabbers may harvest a limit of one bushel of crabs per person, per day, or two bushels per boat
All crab pots must have escape rings for undersized crabs
Recreational crabbers may purchase an annual enhanced recreational crab trap endorsement ($5) to fish up to five crab pots
These laws will take effect on July 1, 2025. They are intended to prevent the overexploitation of South Carolina’s blue crab fishery, which has had far fewer regulations than most states over the past several decades.
Commercial crabbers are also facing big changes in their regulations.
