Summerville bass haven hosting tournament Sunday, Dec 20
Marc Deschenes of VIP Adventures in Summerville is hosting a fishing tournament this weekend that will pit some of the state’s college anglers against anglers from South Carolina’s high school teams.
Deschenes is a competitive angler himself, and recently returned from Lake Guntersville, Alabama after fishing in the Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship tournament. He also competes on the FLW circuit, and is a mainstay on local tournament trails such as the Carolina Anglers Team Trail.
While he has won his share of tournaments and money over the years, Deschenes said his favorite thing about competitive fishing is the relationships he’s formed, the people he has met, and the satisfaction he gets from figuring out what makes those little green fish bite. He wants to do all he can to make sure other anglers, especially young anglers, get those some opportunities.
The tournament will be held this Sunday, Dec 20, at noon, and Deschenes is planning to hold more in the future. Especially with the success of college fishing in recent years, Deschenes sees angling as a saving grace for many of today’s youth.
“A lot of kids don’t play sports in school because there just aren’t enough positions, they aren’t interested, or they just don’t have the time to commit to it. But a lot of those same kids love to fish, and can use that to learn a lot of life skills like teamwork, punctuality, responsibility, and everything else that helps kids mature. Too many kids have too much idle time, and fall into bad habits. Keeping them on the water can help a lot of them stay out of trouble and find productive ways to spend their time and energy,” said Deschenes, who started VIP Adventures over two decades ago.
VIP Adventures is a series of private ponds that vary in size from 11-acres and up. Deschenes has managed the ponds for trophy bass, finding the right balance of baitfish and bass to give anglers a chance at catching a true trophy bass on any cast. He also uses different structure like rock piles, brush piles, sand bars, downed trees, and open water to give anglers the opportunities to fish the type of habitats they will encounter in many different lakes across the nation.
A number of Bassmaster Elite and FLW Tour anglers have spent time at VIP Adventures honing their skills, and the property has hosted championships of other tournament trails in recent years.
