Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits are tops for Cape Fear River spotted bass

Although many baits that imitate baitfish are productive, the favorites of most Cape Fear River fishermen are the spinnerbait and buzzbait. Both allow anglers to cover a lot of water while also avoiding snags.

Spinnerbaits are best in areas with visible current and should be fished with the current when possible. Spotted bass strikes on these baits will put a serious jolt in your rod and arms. White, chartreuse, silver, and sunfish patterns are productive colors.  Baits in the ¼- to ¾-ounce range work best paired with nickel and gold blades of any shape and size. They should be fished at a variety of speeds ranging from burning to slow-rolling.

Buzzbait strikes are often ferocious, which makes fishing them a blast. They can be worked around wooden cover, current breaks or pools and again, they should be worked downcurrent when possible. Black, white and chartreuse tend to be the best colors to use in ¼- to ½-ounce sizes.  Buzzbaits that make a lot of noise, such as the R&S Chatterbuzz, are most productive on overcast, windy days. During bluebird conditions, a more subtle, quiet buzzbait will produce more fish.  Both baits can be fished on medium-heavy to heavy spinning gear or medium to medium-heavy baitcasting gear.
