Quantity and quality

The New River gives up plenty of smallmouth, including an occasional fish that’s longer than 20 inches.

There are lots of smallmouth in the New River, according to Jim Kramer and Roger Mabe.

“My best day was an 80-fish day, including a bunch of red eye. It was a sunny, mid-August day. I have found sunny, warm days are best, in contrast to the best trout days, which are cloudy. A 25-inch smallmouth is my largest to date on a fly rod.”

Not every day yields 80 fish.

“I did pretty good (in fall 2012). The last Saturday in October, I caught a bunch of quality fish, probably 25 or so, over 12 inches,” Mabe said.

Kramer said, “Smallmouth average 10 to 16 inches, and it’s not uncommon to catch fish in the 18- to 22-inch range, occasionally on up to 25 inches.”
