Poppin’ the top is a good move

Topwater baits like Pop-Rs are real bass-catchers around dusk on summer fishing trips at Goose Creek Lake.

Guide Chris Orvin said his favorite way to catch big bass from Goose Creek Reservoir is to fish topwater lures late in the day.

“It seems to me like this lake was made for late-evening topwater fishing, and my lure preference is the Pop-R,” he said. “Other lures will certainly produce, but give me a Pop-R on this lake in August, and odds are good I’m going to hook up with a several big bass and plenty of decent-sized ones as well. It’s a special way to end the day.”

Orvin said the key is to keep moving, working different types of cover until you find the key, then focus your effort there.

“Often, by the time the late evening rolls around, I will have found the general area where there are plenty of bass by using worms and other lures,” he said. “Then I just back off a bit and start target-fishing stumps, logs, blow downs, weeds and other cover either along the shoreline or away from the bank. One key for shoreline fishing late in the day is to find an area where the water drops a couple feet or more quickly. These are the likely hotspots for bass to move up to and bust topwaters late in the day.”
