Kayak fishing perfect fit for Dan River smallies

Kayaks are great fishing platforms for anglers floating small- to medium-sized rivers like the Dan.

Guide Kyle Hoover often takes fishermen on smallmouth bass float trips down the Dan River in a canoe, but he believes kayaks are the wave of the future for stream fishing.

“Kayaks are really nice fishing platforms for smallmouth bass,” he said. “They have a little more stealth than canoes, and that helps because smallies tend to be really spooky.

“Kayaks also draw a little less water than a canoe, so you’re not likely to scrap the bottom and scare fish. Plus, they’re much more maneuverable than a canoe, and you can transport one in the back of a pickup truck.”
