Hot rod for Congaree fishing

Another aspect of Paul Davis’ version of “City Limits Fishing” that would definitely be “Ike-approved” is his choice of rods. Even before he became an associate brand product manager for Abu-Garcia, Davis was sold on the line of Veritas rods, especially for his kayak fishing.

His choices are the 7-foot-6 casting and spinning rods. His preference is a medium action, whether he’s battling current-driven stripers or rock-hugging smallies. He touts the rod’s open blank, which gives him lots of sensitivity, and the fact that at over seven feet, he can work the rod around the nose of his kayak.

“Two things you don’t want to have happen while fighting a fish in a kayak is to let him pin your rod to the side of the boat or get you doubled over in that classic ‘U’ shape,” Davis said. “That may look good in a commercial, but I like the fact that this rod has most of it’s backbone in 70 percent of the rod. It’s a control thing. It’s really hard to control a fish if you’re doubled over or you can only fight him on one side of the boat.”
