Grazin’ in the grass, can you dig it?

A jig or spinnerbait is an excellent lure to fish around Badin Lake’s shoreline grass in the spring.

Badin Lake is well known for the abundance of canary reed grass, an aquatic grass that grows along much of the lake’s shoreline. It is a bass magnet from spring through the fall.

“I love seeing the grass coming up,” said Mike Davis. “That’s an indication that if I want to fish the outside of the grass, I’ll bring a jig or spinnerbait through the grass, and then let it free-fall when you get to the end of the grass. That’s when you get hooked up, because they’ll set up there.”

Chris Baldwin also fishes the grass at Badin. He said it is critical to keep moving when you are fishing this pattern.

“You have to look everywhere, cover a lot of water,” he said.

Finding stumps along with grass and docks is a plus. In fact, dirty-water and clear-water fishermen can expect to fish the grass almost anywhere on the lake because it is so widespread.

“I love fishing the grass,” said Kevin Chandler. “That stuff is all over the lake.”
