Fish the wind

Eddie Lackey caught this beautiful Badin Lake largemouth.

Mike Davis especially loves fishing his dirty-water, power-fishing technique on a windy day. A little wind turns everything on according to him.

“Wind is a great bite,” he said. “The fish feel like they are less susceptible to predators; they’re not as nervous. You can pull up to a pocket that has the wind blowing in there, and it might have shad blown in there or have the crayfish all stirred up.

“When the water is calm, they feel the noise of the boat, the motor, everything. You get a little wind (and) the fish get a little bit brave,” Davis said. “With wind you can get by a little easier and don’t have to be nearly as quiet.”

Kevin Chandler loves wind-blown pockets as well. He looks for gizzard shad, which can be five to six inches long; when he finds them, he knows he’s onto something really good. He’ll opt for much bigger baits in this situation.
