The angler’s death was ruled an accidental drowning.

Fisherman fell out of boat

The lifeless body of Maggie Valley, NC’s Rodney Lyle Palmer was recovered by divers in the Tugaloo River section of Lake Hartwell in Oconee County, SC on Nov. 15. The coroner’s office said the cause of death was drowning.

Around 2:30 p.m., Palmer dropped his son and a friend off at the shoreline so the two could go deer hunting. Palmer told them he was going to do some fishing, and would pick them up later. But when the hunters returned to the shoreline, they saw Palmer’s empty boat near the middle of the cove. They called 911 at 6:11 p.m., and search teams arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.

The coroner’s office estimated Palmer died some time between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. His body was found in about 8 feet of water at 8:20 p.m.

An autopsy confirmed the death was a result of drowning. No other injuries were observed, and the coroner said there was no evidence of a medical event.
