My son Beau and I had the opportunity to go on a turkey hunt together on private land in Union County, NC. It was a Youth Day turkey hunt, and I was thrilled to spend some quality time with him. Beau and I have always enjoyed spending time outdoors, and turkey hunting is a special bonding experience between a father and son.
Before the sun rose, we set up our decoys and began calling with a slate call. We were both excited to see if we could bag ourselves a trophy gobbler. After a short while, we heard a gobble in the distance, and our hearts began to race. We thought he may have gotten hung up, but he came running in towards us when he saw the half strut jake we had set up.
Beau took aim with his single-shot 12-gauge and fired a 2 3/4″ turkey load. Despite the recoil, he was unphased and excited by the successful shot he made. We walked over to the gobbler and were thrilled to see an 8.5″ beard and 1″ spurs. It was a special moment for both of us, and we couldn’t stop high-fivin’ for a good 5 minutes.
We took the gobbler home and made deep fried turkey nuggets. It was a day we’ll never forget, and we’re already looking forward to our next hunt. The thrill of the hunt and the excitement of the moment will stay with us forever.
Turkey hunting is not just about the thrill of the hunt; it’s also about the memories and experiences that you share with your loved ones. Spending time in nature and bonding with my son is an experience that I treasure deeply. It was an unforgettable moment for both of us, and I was proud of him for taking such a successful shot.
Overall, it was a great experience, and I am grateful to have been a part of it. I hope that we can continue to make more memories like this in the future, and I encourage other parents to take their children hunting as well. It’s a great way to bond, learn new skills, and enjoy the great outdoors.
