I was hunting right outside the city limits of gaffney southcarolina on a piece of property a friend of mine got permission to hunt at the start of the season he had gotten this deer on trail camera 3months ago in september and it disappeared after only 2 weeks of coming in nocturnal nightly. he thought he was gone for good so we had planned a meat hunt on friday nov 21st to harvest a couple of does that where trafficking heavily through the property sense after all there were no mature bucks being caught on camera. so we met up around 3:15pm for a afternoon hunt we sat up about 50 yards from a swamp sitting atop a ridge line and at about 4:30pm I seen a deer start making its way through a thicket across the swamp. i could clearly make out that it was a deer but did not look like a trophy buck by any means but i shouldered my rifle anyways given that this was a meat hunt and it is late season after getting my rifle to my shoulder and making sure once again this was a deer making its way through the thicket. i found an opening infront of the way the deer was heading waiting for it to step out to take a shot after holding there only about 10 seconds he stepped out and i took the shot with the shot landing a little further back than anticipated (it was free handed at roughly 70yds). he still dropped right away making tracking unnecessary so i walked down the ridge and made my way across the swamp to ground check the harvest but as i got closer i slowly started to realize this wasnt just an average buck. this was the non typical 8 point deer my buddy had gotten on camera in september that had disappeared. completely in shock that this had happened we both sat in disbelief that it had unfolded how it did given that he had hunted the property multiple times a week for 2 months straight and had not gotten this deer on camera or seen sign of a mature buck in the area. we laughed it off and know that this buck will forever hold a story few will truly understand of luck and coincidence and will be a funny story to look back on in years to come but i dont believe i will be invited to hunt with him on a property with a target buck on it again anytime soon
