Belated Christmas Buck

I haven’t had the opportunity to hunt much this past season because of being activated in the National Guard to help with the hurricane recovery. I spent the month of October in Chimney rock and Lake Lure removing debris and rerouting the French broad river. I got out a couple times in November and December but saw very little deer activity. I was hunting the evening of December 30th and was just looking to harvest a doe. I had 3 doe come in from behind me and they were very cautious as all late season deer tend to be. The largest came in to about 15 yards before she figured out something wasn’t right. This put the other two on alert as they tried to locate me. In the seconds before I felt she was going to bust me I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I slowly rotated my head and saw antlers coming towards me. I quickly shouldered my rifle and sent a round into his front shoulder and watched him drop 30 yards later. This is my first late season buck harvest and the first where my father-in-law and son could be apart of the process. I’m also very thankful to my wife for allowing me to get out and enjoy the outdoors. We were also able to start the New Year with a nah as my wife bagged this nice mature doe within in minutes of the season closing. We are Blessed beyond measure.
