Thomas Evans of Ellerbe, NC killed an 11-point buck in Chesterfield County, SC on Sept. 22, 2024. It was his second buck of the season.
Evans shot the deer with a .308 Remington 700 from 175 yards away while sitting in an elevated box stand. The deer fell for good after 20 yards.
He had a history with this buck, through trail camera photos and in-person encounters.
“I started my history with this deer earlier in the year, on feed stations with cell cameras,” said Evans. “I got daylight pics just about every day.”
Originally, Evans was going to hold off on shooting this buck.
“I originally wanted to let my 14-year-old kill him on Youth Day,” he said. “But storms came a couple of days before and flooded out the feeder he was coming to. So we couldn’t hunt him.”
On Sept. 21, Evans and his son were hunting in different stands.
“It’s been cat-and-mouse up until Sept. 21, when he came out on my son and he couldn’t get a shot on him from another stand,” he said.
The next day, Evans and his son hunted from the same stand, in an area that this buck had not been visiting. Evans had been pursuing a different buck, a 9-pointer. When he saw what he thought was the 9-point buck, he shot it. But, it wasn’t the 9-point at all, but this 11-point buck.
“I accidentally shot him, thinking he was the 9-point without the split brow tines,” he said. “He makes the second 11-point I’ve killed since the season opener. He’s guesstimated to be a 4 1/2-year-old, and should measure out in the mid 130s, gross.”
