A nice first buck for 10-year-old Sutton Jay
Sutton Jay, a 10-year-old Kershaw County, SC native, bagged his first buck on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023. Harvesting the buck in Kershaw County, Sutton and his older brother Gentry, have both watched this deer on their trail camera for a few months. The buck mostly showed himself in the early morning hours while the boys were already at school.
The evening was a cool one. Sutton, sitting alone with his 6.5 Creedmoor, watched anxiously as four does trotted across in front of him. Having deer fever, he thought about dropping a doe because his Mama was out of cube steak, and had told him they needed meat. But Sutton kept watching and soon after the does left, the big buck came out.
Sutton said his heart was beating out of his chest when he leveled down and shot as the trotting buck came to a stand still. Sutton was in a ladder stand, and watched as the deer bolted after the shot fired, but heard it drop not far off. Waiting on his Papa to get to the stand to pick him up, Sutton never left the stand. His Papa and older brother arrived and they tracked the deer about 30 yards from where Sutton had shot.
The 9-point-buck is Sutton’s first buck. It was a huge body deer that’s coming back to his family as much more than just cube steak. It was a wonderful night cleaning the big buck with all of his family there to show their support. Wonderful memories thanks to South Carolina’s beautiful wildlife and a passionate 10-year-old sportsman who loves to hunt.
