Have you seen the deer in the flesh? Did you shoot in an open are? Ground Blind or Stand? Drop him or have to track him?
I had seen the buck that we had named high tower one time in the flesh on Monday (December 2nd) before I harvested him, my dad, Brian Booth had seen him twice both times being a couple minutes after shooting light. He came out on Monday December 2nd just about the same time I would say 4:45 but this time he was in the bean field on the stand we call the tower. He came out right at the back right side of the field and I didn’t know the yards off the top of my head. He was quarter turned towards me and I had him in the scope, I knew it was close to 400 yards but wasn’t 100% percent sure so, I go to grab my rangefinders out of my bag, I range it at 420 yards go to get back in my scope and high tower is nowhere to be found. He had stepped back into the woods, he didn’t even stand out there for a minute and a half. So, of course the tears start rolling. I have hunted this deer all season, not pulling the trigger in 6 weeks other than at a doe on my birthday. I came home and was talking to my dad still crying because I thought I had missed my one chance and should have taken a bad shot but he reassured me I did the right thing. So, I hunted the same stand (the tower) on Tuesday December 3rd hoping to catch him slipping and of course I didn’t see a deer but, that night we had him on camera at our other stand (the Lane) at 7pm and 1:30am. I decided I would hunt “the Lane” wednesday afternoon and sure enough almost right at 5pm high tower steps out right at 90 yards looking right at me. I am thanking the good lord above at this point for giving me another chance and praying for him to turn broadside and sure enough he did. I shot him and he fell right where he was standing so of course I’m all excited and screaming, I call dad and he meets me so we can drag him out. We go and look into the shooting lane and high tower is nowhere to be found, we have walked all up and down the lane. I go ghost white and almost start crying again because we can’t find blood just see where he was kicking dirt. I realize he was in front of the camera when I shot so I got dad to pull the pictures up and you can see where he had crawled into the left side of the lane, I go and look and there is high tower sitting on all fours just as pretty as he can be still alive, nor me or dad have a gun so we sprint to the truck to get one praying he doesn’t get up and run. We sprint back and finish him off and that is the story of how I harvested high tower.
Did you shoot in an open area? Yes, he was shot in an open area, I was hunting a tree stand
