This is the first year I’ve ever hunted black powder season. We had to go to three different stores to find the gun, because our local store was sold out! Ended up with a CVA Wolf V2. I was in a box stand, facing the complete opposite direction, when I glanced over my right shoulder – and saw something off in the distance. I looked again… thought my eyes were playing tricks on me! There he was, magnificent! Walking straight towards me, ever so slowly. One hoof in front of the other. Looking straight at me. Now I had to get turned around without spooking him. He would take a few steps, put his head down to nibble. I would turn slightly. Rinse, repeat. For what seemed like forever! (Likely about 5 minutes) I finally got turned completely around and was ready, but he would give me the body shot. I patiently waited, calmed my breathing and heart rate. Something in the woodline caught his attention and he turned his head to the right (my left) and I took the neck shot! I frantically tried waving the smoke away – remember, this is new to me! Hoping he didn’t go far. But – there he was. Laying right where I shot him! About 65 yards away, in all his glory. I scrambled down and ran towards him while calling on my handheld radio to my partner (hunting elsewhere in the area) “deer down! Deer down!” No response… I looked down, my radio was OFF! I quickly turned it on and hollared “deer down!” My partner responded: I heard ya shoot! On my way…
