My wife (Tammy) does not hunt too often and after the success of our son, earlier this year, she decided to do some late season hunting. We got to our stand right around day break and settled in. It wasn’t long before we observed movement down the power line we were sitting on. Tammy pulled up her rifle and sighted in on what she believed to be a doe, crossing the easement. She said she was having a hard time seeing through the scope on her 270, so I offered for her to look through the scope on my rifle. “Wow, that’s much better!” She exclaimed. After letting the doe walk, I assumed she was going to hand me my larger, heavier 7mm Mag rifle back and use her 270 caliber rifle. To my surprise, she kept my rifle in the ready position in front of her.
A little while later, we heard a friend off in the distance shoot from his stand. I reached out to see if he needed assistance. After all, Tammy was the primary hunter, and I could slip out easily to help my friend load his deer. I said out loud to my wife, “As soon as I leave, you’ll shoot a big buck.” My friend said he had everything under control, so I didn’t go.
Not even a minute later, I see Tammy raise the 7mm Mag and sight in on something coming out of the woods on the power line. There were no words, but I could see she was getting steady and serious. Looking out of the blind, I could make out a dark figure with what appeared to be a hazy blur on top of its head. “It’s a buck!” I thought to myself. And before I knew it, “BOOM!”. I looked as the deer fell over, right where it stood.
Tammy lowered the rifle and looked at me with a huge grin on her face! “Holy Cow, that was awesome!” She said. “Keep watch with the rifle”, I said. “He might get back up.”
After a few minutes of waiting and believing for sure the deer wasn’t moving, we went to retrieve the buck Tammy had just shot. A 6 point South Carolina deer with a tall rack. This deer looked to be a brawler. He had two broken tines on his rack from fighting other bucks during the rut.
Just an awesome day and an awesome experience for my wife. Unfortunately though, I think I lost my good deer rifle.
