Dawson McCaskill’s 8-point velvet buck

Dawson McCaskill

It was Dawson McCaskill’s first crossbow buck

Seven-year-old Dawson McCaskill kept tabs on a fine buck in velvet once the 2023 archery season opened in Kershaw County and the rest of South Carolina’s Game Zone 4 on Aug. 15. And on Aug. 24, the young hunter arrived home from school anxious to get into the woods with his Ravin R10 crossbow. Hunting from a ground blind, he got his chance. The 8-point buck in full velvet stepped into range, and McCaskill made a perfect shot from 33 yards away. It’s his first velvet buck, and his first kill with the crossbow.

If McCaskill’s name or photo look familiar, it’s because you’ve likely seen him in Carolina Sportsman Magazine, at CarolinaSportsman.com, or both. Even at 7-years-old, he’s already an accomplished outdoorsman, with many hunting and fishing feats to his credit.
