Brayleigh Layne gets her first buck and crossbow kill!

Brayleigh never backs down from a challenge. So when her dad, Brandon, introduced her to hunting as a way to spend more time together, she embraced it with a skeptical smile and an open mind.

During the ’24 season, she successfully tagged out on several doe management hunts, but deep down she longed for a buck to proudly hang beside her papa’s. She knew it wouldn’t be easy, especially since the new farm they hunt is archery-only. With that in mind, Brayleigh spent what little free time she had between competitive cheer, high school cheer, dance, and youth church ministry sharpening her crossbow skills.

That dedication paid off on opening day. From a tower blind with her dad by her side, she watched as a beautiful, mature 9-point buck stepped into view and eased into a narrow path to feed. Determination written across her face, Brayleigh patiently waited for the perfect shot. At 29 yards, she released her arrow, making a flawless shot that dropped the Lenoir County trophy buck in his tracks.

To say she was excited would be an understatement, she was thrilled, proud, and overflowing with emotions. But the best part came afterward: she quickly realized the fun was over and the work had just begun. Staying right by her dad’s side, she helped process her buck, knowing it would provide many future meals for family and friends.
