Aiken County huntress kills 8-point buck in velvet

8-point buck is her biggest ever

Shandi Young of Graniteville, S.C. killed a wall hanger 8-point buck in Aiken County on Aug. 15, 2001. The buck was in full velvet and weighed 200 pounds. She shot the deer around 8 p.m. after sitting in the stand for a little more than an hour.

It was her first time seeing the deer, but she knew all about the 8-point buck thanks to plenty of trail camera photos over the past two years. It’s not the first buck she’s ever killed, but it’s the first time she’s killed one on opening day.

“This was my first time shooting a deer on opening day, and my first buck in velvet. I was super excited about it,” she said.

Young was hunting from an elevated stand in a wooded area, and pulled the trigger on her Remington 700 .308 when the deer was about 60 yards away. She found it after a short tracking job of 30 yards.

Young enjoys providing for her family

She’s a selective huntress, and passed on two smaller bucks before the big one showed up. Passing up smaller bucks to let them grow is a big part of her hunting strategy.

“Two years ago, I probably saw 50 deer throughout the season and did not shoot one. I let them walk to grow,” she said.

Last year, that strategy paid off for her. She killed her biggest deer up until that date. But the one she killed in velvet surpasses that one.

“Last season, I got lucky on an evening hunt and killed the biggest deer I’ve shot up until this season’s buck. It feels good to be able to put meat in the freezer for our family. And I love having the chance to get a nice buck as well,” she said.
