Chesterfield County buck weighed 158 pounds
Colt Nolan of Chesterfield, SC killed a 10-point buck in full velvet on Aug. 10, South Carolina’s first Youth Day of the 2024 deer hunting season. The 14-year-old shot the deer at 6:30 a.m. with a 300 WinMag from 100 yards away while walking to his stand. The buck dropped immediately. His hunt didn’t get off to a great start, but once it began, it turned into a quick and successful outing.
“It started out bad because I woke up late and rushed to my hunting stand,” said Nolan. “I didn’t even make it into the stand and I heard something. I turned around and there he was.”
Not even in his stand yet, the young hunter had to take the shot without his stand’s rail or any other support for his rifle.
“I knew I had to take the shot free handed, praying that I could hit him,” he said. “Once I took the shot, he fell and I hesitated to walk over for a second, because I wasn’t believing what I was seeing, and that was him wrapped in velvet.”
It just goes to show you that the old saying “better late than never,” is true, even in deer hunting.
“I couldn’t believe I had gotten one wrapped in velvet. Best hunt of my life so far!” said Nolan.
