Upstate fish kill impacted numerous species of fish

Dead fish were widespread on Lake Greenwood’s lower portion on April 13, 2026 prompting SCDNR, Greenwood County officials, and the SC Dept. of Environmental Services to launch an investigation that so far hasn’t produced any answers for what caused the event.

The agencies all conducted tests of water samples and fish samples collected at the site, and SCDNR questioned facilities upstream of the event, in hopes of determining if any operational issues took place.

Crappie, yellow perch, flathead catfish, striped bass and bluegill were among the species impacted by the fish kill.

Fish kills are normally caused by localized oxygen depletion, excessive algal blooms, or high water temperatures. None of these were factors in this instance, according to authorities.

If you have any information on this fish kill, or observe a fish kill anywhere in South Carolina, contact SCDNR at 800-922-5431.
