Bowfishing trip ruined by HUGE mayfly hatch

Mayfly hatches may help fly fishermen, but they’re no help for bowfishing

Anglers love mayfly hatches. Or at least that’s how the story goes. I’m sure it’s more true while fly-fishing than it is while bowfishing, like we were doing at Santee when this huge mayfly hatch overwhelmed us.

By the time the night was over, we couldn’t take a step on the boat without slipping and sliding because of all the mayfly guts underneath our shoes. I don’t know how many we swallowed but it was definitely more than the recommended daily allowance.

Hopefully the fly fishermen have more luck with these hatches than we did. The mayflies weren’t helpful for our bowfishing. They weren’t helpful for anything at all.

Have you ever been caught in a mayfly hatch this big?
