9-point buck was killed at high elevation
Darryl Fox of Weaverville, N.C., had no idea he was going to kill the biggest buck of his life last fall. A teacher and baseball coach at North Buncombe High School, he didn’t get to do everything he usually does leading up to deer season, or even get in the woods during archery season, because of the sickness and death of his father last year.
But when he finally got a couple of days free off from school, he took advantage of them, taking a big 9-pointer he calls a “high-elevation buck,” entering it, then being drawn as the winner of Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest for December.
“I killed this deer above 3,500 feet in elevation,” he said. “I killed a big 8-pointer in there last year, and I passed up a couple I saw on trail cameras. This one could have been one of them.”
His prizes are a $25 gift certificate to the Sportsman’s Online Store and a year’s free subscription to the magazine. He will remain eligible, along with every other contest entrant, in the drawing for the grand prize: a three-year subscription to Carolina Sportsman, a $50 gift certificate to the Sportsman’s Online Store, and a two-day deer-hog combo hunt for two people to Cherokee Run Hunting Lodge near Chesterfield, S.C.
Fox, who goes by “blockmason” on www.carolinasportsman.com, killed the buck on Nov. 22, but he didn’t enter it in the contest until Dec. 12. He went to a spot where he’d killed a number of deer before, climbed up in his stand, and killed the buck at 4:30 p.m. with a 75-yard shot from his .270.
