Buck weighed 208-pounds
Josh Medlin of Conway killed the biggest deer of his life last month while hunting in Galivant’s Ferry. The 8-point buck was gross green-scored by Stuart Johnston of Wildlife Creations Taxidermy in Conway. It measured 139 5/8-inches, and netted 138-inches. The deer tipped the scales at 208-pounds.
Medlin shot the deer with a Browning A-Bolt .7mm rifle from a ladder stand, and by all accounts, it was a pretty uneventful afternoon hunt until the buck walked out.
“I’ve been hunting there with a buddy for a couple of weeks without seeing a whole lot, and we got to the stand around 3:30 in the afternoon. We did some rattling and grunting, and about 30 minutes before dark, a doe came into a small clearing, and it went into the swamp,” said Medlin.
“I rattled and grunted again, and just after that, the buck stepped out. It was all bristled up and ready to fight. He’s the first buck I’ve successfully attracted with rattling and grunting, so that was good to see,” Medlin said.
It was almost dark by the time the deer showed up, and once he laid eyes on the buck, the hunt was over pretty quickly.
“I raised my rifle and got a good look through my scope. We’ve got an open lane through a cut down, and I could see it through there. The buck was probably 55- to 60-yards away when I shot it. I knew it was a good deer, but I didn’t realize just how big until I got to it,” he said.
“You want to talk about an adrenaline rush? Man, I was just shaking when I was loading that deer up. I just had no idea the deer was that big,” he said.
