Students sought to help with NCDMF research on bycatch; fellowship is available
North Carolina Sea Grant and the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries are accepting applications for a fellowship opportunity for students nearing completion of an advanced degree program in natural resources or marine sciences.
The one-year N.C. Marine Fisheries Management Fellowship, co-sponsored by Sea Grant and NCDMF, is open to graduate students nearing completion of, or who have recently completed, their advanced degree program at southeastern universities and colleges from Maryland to Texas.
The selected fellow will be placed with NCDMF and N.C. State University’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, beginning this fall semester. Both facilities are in Morehead City.
The fellow will use spatial analytical approaches to estimate bycatch “hot spots” from fishery-independent and -dependent data. Recommendations from the fellow’s research will help the NCDMF assess and manage North Carolina’s marine fisheries.
“The answers to complex North Carolina fisheries questions, like those posed about bycatch, will come from providing future scientists and managers with this type of field experience early in their careers,” says Susan White, North Carolina Sea Grant executive director.
Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m., Aug. 22, 2014.

· A personal and academic resume;
· A statement giving reasons for applying and educational/career goals, no longer than two pages; and
· Copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial are acceptable).
· In addition, have two professors with knowledge of the applicant’s academic performance email letters of recommendation directly to jabuckel@ncsu.edu.
Travel to Morehead City for interviews will be at the applicant’s expense.
Jeffrey Buckel, a North Carolina State University professor of applied ecology, is selection process coordinator. The successful fellow will be announced in early autumn. The fellowship provides a stipend of $35,000.
