Jeff Smith, a popular moderator on www.northcarolinasportsman.com’s message boards, died on Friday, Dec. 27, in his hometown of Kannapolis, after a battle with esophageal cancer.
Smith, 43, was known on the message boards as “Creek07.” He became a moderator in 2009 after posting for three years, was diagnosed in October, according to his friend and fellow moderator, Jeff Huggins of Roseboro, aka “Viperx4.”
He was hunting in Kansas in October, when he felt like something wasn’t right,” said Huggins, who said doctors began treatment soon thereafter before Smith returned home in mid-November to be cared for by Hospice. “By the time they found it, it had already blown out (metastized). They found a lesion on his spine and then a lesion on his brain stem.
“He and I knew each other and had been friends on the message boards, and they made us moderators four years ago. We were good friends, and we hunted together a lot.
“Everybody on the message boards looked up to him and appreciated him.”
Smith, who owned a landscaping business, is survived by his wife, Krista, and a daughter, Emily. Visitation will be on Monday, Dec. 30, at Whitley’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis, with services at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Second Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis, where Smith was an elder.
