Serious deer hunters know that success in the fall is often a result of preparation done during the summer. And that’s why this month is the perfect time to hang your deer stand.
One of the best reasons to hang that stand now is that is minimizes pressure on your deer herd. You can set it up now, then not set foot in the woods again for weeks. That will allow deer to get used to the new structure without hunters coming in and out. By opening day, deer won’t think twice about your stand.
Another reason you should do this now is because of the long days July provides. You still have plenty of time after work to get it done, and if you watch the weather reports, you can time things so that you aren’t having to deal with rain or mud. Not being pressed for time allows you to do it correctly, and just the way you want it.
It’s true that July is one of the hottest months of the year, but in all honesty, you’re not going to get a break from hot weather until deer season is already in full swing.
Summer’s foliage gives you the best look at what branches you need to trim, or what small trees you need to cut down, for shooting lanes, while also providing you the most cover. You don’t want to wait until just before deer season to start cutting branches.
Watch it
You’ll also be able to determine how far you can shoot in each direction, which will help dial in your scope properly.
Getting that stand up now also allows you to monitor the wildlife activity that’s coming around. You don’t want to hang a stand without putting a trail camera or two to keep watch on what’s showing up. Opt for cameras that you can check remotely with your cell phone and you’ll be all set without having to disturb the area again until it’s time to hunt.
With cameras out, you can monitor travel patterns along with feeding and bedding behavior. And it’s always good to get a look at whatever deer are visiting your site before the season begins. By Opening Day, you’ll have a good idea of the best time to get in the stand to get a shot at whatever deer you decide to put on your hit list, and from what direction you can expect the deer to approach.
This information can be invaluable, especially during the first week or two of deer season when deer should be the least wary. But it’s only possible if you go ahead and get that stand up now.
Don’t wait any longer, it’s time to get in the woods and hang that deer stand.
