Rigging a flutter hook

A flutter hook is a great way to rig a long, thin soft-plastic bait weedless.

A weighted hook, aka flutter hook, is a great way to rig any number of soft-plastic baits such as a Fluke, jerk shad, or trick work. A long, thin weight that is molded on the shank of the hook gives the rig weight and imparts action. Probably the only downside to using flutter hooks is that the hook has to be re-tied when changing baits, but it reminds you to periodically check your line or leader for nicks.

• Grasp the flutter hook so that you can work the eye of the hook into the soft plastic bait.

• Measure the hook insertion point at the same length from the eye of the hook to the bend in the hook, approximately ¾-inch from the head of the bait.

• Insert the eye of the hook into the bottom side of the bait at the measured location. Push the eye of the hook up into the bait, turn the hook slightly, then push it out through the nose.

• Fold the body of the bait slightly upward, then insert the point of the hook straight through the body of the bait so it hangs naturally straight on the hook.

• Pull the bend of the hook through the bait. Straighten the soft-plastic bait between the eye and the point of the hook. To hold the bait in place as well as make it weedless, stretch the front portion of the bait forward and imbed the point slightly into the top of the bait. Check and re-imbed the hook periodically.
