North Augusta dominates BASS state youth bass-fishing championship

Brandt wins 11-14 age group with day’s biggest catch

Grayson Brandt of the North Augusta Fishing Team brought in the heaviest sack of bass, and his teammates took five of the top six places at the South Carolina 2013 BASS Federation National State Junior Championship, held Nov. 2 on Lake Murray.

Brandt won the 11-14 age group with 7.8 pounds, which was the best overall weight among 67 students on seven teams who participated in the tournament. Brandt also took big-fish honors with a 4.28-pound largemouth.

Forest Thaxton of North Augusta was second in the 11-14 age group with 5.65, and teammate Matt Lykins was third with 4.04.

Shawn Hall of North Augusta won the 15-18 age group with 6.37 pounds. Teammate Simeon O’Meara was second with 5.89, and Jason Knight of the Mid-Carolina Jr. Bassmasters was third with 5.24.

More than half of the field weighed in fish.

Teams participating were the North Augusta Fishing Team, Conway High School Tiger Anglers, Landrum High School Fishing Club, Lake Wylie Junior Bassmasters, Mid Carolina Jr. Bassmasters, Mid-Carolina Junior Anglers and Upstate Junior Bassmasters.
