SC Saltwater Sportfishing Association schedule continues
The 2011 offshore fishing tournaments continued with the SCSSA Dolphin Days event that was fished on Saturday May 21. Eighteen boats went fishing and 9 of the 32 fish weighed in were reeled in by female anglers. Dolphin and wahoo were brought to the scales at the Charleston City Marina. The first place club points went to Bryson Hills on the Prowess for her 34.1-pound dolphin.The Dolphin Days tourney is the second event of the year for the SC Saltwater Sportfishing Association, which is followed by their Summer Oceanic tournament on June 18 and two others that are held in July and August. For club members its all about the points earned along the way in order to be the top offshore angler at the end of the summer. First place gets 50 points, while second place gets 30 points; third place earns 20 points and fourth gets 10 points.
The weigh-in began with a nice 52.3-pound wahoo caught on the 24-foor Sea Hunt Simplicity and reeled in by angler J.J. Goff. Team Simplicity is sponsored by Seel’s Marine and their hoo hit a blue and white Ilander on the shotgun line. Goff’s fish would finish as the first place wahoo, which also gave him the Outstanding Male Angler award. Finishing in second place in the wahoo division was Shawn Siman’s 38.7-pounder caught aboard the 48-foot Ocean Fin Allie.
The top dolphin was brought to the scales by Bryson Hills fishing on the 38-foot Buddy Davis named Prowess. She reeled in a 34.1-pound mahi mahi to make her father Ritt Ritter, owner of Prowess, very proud. Ritter also witnessed his daughter catch and release a blue marlin on this day, giving her the Top Female Angler award. Believe it or not, Hills caught her marlin during a double-header that saw angler Fran Gulski catch and release a sailfish!
Jeff Minchew from In Too Deep reeled in the second place dolphin at 30.7-pounds. His fish came to the scales first, leaving Steve Layton’s identical 30.7-pounder, caught from Painkiller, to finish in third place. The fourth place dolphin went to Brian King for his 28.5-pound fish caught aboard the 32-foot Wellcraft named Glory Days.
