Workshop is part of Becoming an Outdoors Woman program
Many women enjoy fly fishing just as much as their male counterparts do, but they sometimes find it intimidating to attend workshops on fly tying with men. It’s just a fact of life for women who enjoy the outdoors, and it’s unfortunately a turnoff that keeps some women out of the sport. Luckily, the NCWRC has a solution for that.
A women-only fly fishing workshop is being held April 23 at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Fayetteville.
The workshop is part of the NCWRC’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program, which is open for females 18 and older. It’s an international program which helps women learn outdoor skills in hands-on settings.
BB Gillen, helps run the program and said the fly fishing workshop will cover the basics of fly fishing such as casting, knots, rod assembly, and fly tying. Workshop attendees will practice their new skills on two ponds once they learn the basics.
“This is the third year that we’ve offered this fly fishing workshop for women only at the Pechmann Center, and last year’s event filled up fairly quickly. It’s a great opportunity for women to learn how to fly fish in a fun, no-stress environment with instructors who are very knowledgeable and patient,” said Gillen.
The workshop costs $20, which covers all equipment plus lunch, drinks, and snacks. The workshop is limited to 40 women, is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and requires pre-registration.
