It was a pretty good night. 3000 acres is a lot to cover but thermal scanners and scopes make all the difference. A total of 61 hogs viewed but not all were aproachable due the wind. An AR10 and 15 are plenty for a spot and stalk hunt. Seldom over 50 yard shots. At last the farmers have harvested their wheat and we can see them clearly. It may only be a few weeks till the recently planted soy beans will be tall enough to provide them cover again so we have to really make a move. We hit the fields at around 9:30 and by 2:15 they were piled into the truck. Not a normal night. Most of the time 2 or 3 are the average. But you have to have a pretty good night every now and then. Grantham , NC is now minus 13 more hogs. I am one of the Hogamanics from Bounty Hoggers.
Its been raining for the last 2 months it seems but I never realized that it could be a good thing in the hog hunting world. Decided to check a few seldom hunted locations that were on ridges . Even a hog dosen't want to stay in water all the time. Especialy when the water is below freezing. Not 15 minutes after entering the stand I caught sight of him just ambling down the ridge. Looking like he owned it. Appear to be a good size but There was no ground shrinkage in this one. The nuese river islands near Grantham have produced some nice pork but this old boy was king of these woods. 80 grn 223 from an AR 15 opened up a slot for a new king. 277 pounds and armed to the teeth-- literally.
