  • Today started bad but ended awesome. My son couldn't find his face mask or shells. Finally found both but made us 20 mins late. Got to our spot and didn't hear a gobble, then started raining. Ugh. Stopped raining. Called softly and got a response. 6 hens, 1 jake, and a gobbler showed up. The tom followed the hens across the field right into our lap at about 735 am. 30 yd shot. 18 lbs,7/8' spurs, 10 3/4' beard. Took 3 years and 3 misses for him to get a bird. I'm proud of him for being persistent.

This has been a good month for me and my family as far as hunting. I killed a good buck with my muzzleloader and my son killed his first deer with his own rifle that he bought with his own money that he had saved on November the 12th. I dont know who was happier, him or me. He was so nervous I could hear his teeth chattering before he made the shot. My buck showed up about two minutes after legal shooting time on election day. He was within 50 yds before I knew he was there. I made the shot at 46 yds and he ran about 50 more yds before taking a dirt nap. He is the biggest buck I have ever killed as far as body size with a live body weight of 189 lbs. The antlers are not the biggest but my daughter was with me and spotted him first which made it a very special hunt.

There's a buck and a doe within 40 feet of the camera. I looked at the pic 3 or 4 times before I saw both of them. It's no wonder I cant kill a deer!

Last year he was an eight. His buddy is bigger with chocolate antlers.

What's the deal with these birds with long beards and short spurs this year. My son killed one yesterday with 7/8' spurs and 10 3/4' beard. My friend got one with 1' spurs and 11 1/2' beard. What gives?

Good job little man. I remember my first deer and it wasnt nearly as nice as yours plus I was 13 when I got him. Concentrate on your education and your hunting and you'll grow up to be an awesome young man. Good luck the rest of the season dude.

A comment titled: slugs or no slugs in response to a report titled: Slugs or Buckshot?

A friend of mine bought a shotgun called a Maverick. I think its a Mossburg but not sure. He shoots the Federal sabot slugs through it and it is deadly. I was standing on the ground under his stand once waiting for him to come down to go get lunch when a deer came running through the woods. Bob whistled the deer stopped about 60 yds shot was fired. Dead deer. Those hoolow point sabot slugs are awesome. Not sure of the range but I know 60 yds they are good! Hope this helps.

Ive looked at this thing over and over. Every time I look at it I see something different. It reminds me of one of those puzzles you stare at until your brain finally sees the picture. It's a good thing I have good hearing abilities cause my eyes are playing tricks on me. LOL I just thought the pic was cool and hope you guys have enjoyed it.

Now I think I'm like viperx4 seeing things that are not there. I went back to the original pic and zoomed in and now I think I see another doe between the first doe and the tree just right of her. Look for a nose and eyeball about chest level to the first doe. Man these things make me look stupid!

Look for the doe in the background slightly left of center. You can see her head. The buck is about 15 ft from the camera behind the two biggest trees. You can see his antlers to the left of the tree and his back end between the trees. I wish I knew how to tell you how to zoom in. I guess I wasted $2400 on eye surgery! LOL

Keep trying dude. I had an episode like this once and got him on the third encounter. He stood around in the dark snorting and stomping until the sun came up behind him allowing me to see him for the shot. Dont give up!
