  • After hearing three birds on the roost this morning the birds went silent. Around 9:00 am I moved right beside my wife to eat a sandwich and come up with a new plan. When I stood up the birds were 75 yards away! I was busted! Slowly I sat back down and called to see the Tom turn into the tree line and leave. Feeling discouraged about my rookie mistake, I moved back to my tree and thought what the hell I'll give it another shot. Hit the box call and two birds answered. I then turned to my wife and said 'get ready honey, their coming our way'. A few minutes later two strutters stepped into the field. A lonely hen led them to about 45 yards away. I had a good shot the whole time, but that's not what we were there for. It was my wife's opportunity to kill her first turkey. One last sequence with the diaphragm call made them close the distance. There was a chance for a Chatham county double, but at this point someone needed to shoot a bird. I asked if she was ready and she said yes. SHOOT EM!! The bigger of the two dropped instantly! I continued to call after taking a shot at the second bird that was flying away at 100 mph knowing I had shot 10 yards behind it!! I gave it a few seconds and finally said to her 'lets go get your bird'! I cannot describe to you the joy I have felt today! I am truly blessed to have a wife that enjoys to hunt as much as me! God has blessed us with this beautiful bird and another wonderful experience in the great outdoors! If you're just starting, don't give up! If you have been hunting for a while, take your wife or a friend or a child and give them the chance to experience what we all love so much! If they are successful you will walk away feeling just as good or better than if you had been the one to punch that tag! 11 1/4 in beard, 1 1/4 in spurs (not sure on the weight, we do not own a scale)

Fuquay gun and gold should be able to help you out. Very friendly and knowledgable staff. Haven't been in there in a few weeks but the usually have a great selection.

Jager gave you good advice. I have never had luck with locator calls. Birds don't always gobble from the roost but after a couple of mornings of being out there you should hear them if they are on the property

I think it's a great idea for your daughter GT, it's something that will last many years and can be enjoyed by her and her children in the future! Looking at the pic has already got me excited for turkey season and we still got a month and a half of deer season with a few duck hunts mixed in to go! I started out deer hunting but those thunder chickens seem to get more fun to hunt every year!

Congrats GT!!! Great deer. I enjoy reading the captions so keep it up. Hopefully I'll have a story to tell after Saturday when I head down to Lee county with my wife and grandfather!

Most of the deer I have killed have been with a smooth bore shotgun and slugs. Improved cylinder is what choke you need to use to avoid damage. My only suggestion would be to have iron sights on the barrel. The bead works great for buckshot but having a exact point of aim with a slug is key. Good luck!!

I've seen scrapes in Durham county and Chatam county pop up in the last week. Makes me excited for the weekend hunt!
